New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan will view the 350-foot span’s historic passage by barge beneath the Brooklyn Bridge from Lower Manhattan’s Pier 11 starting at 7:30 a.m. The new bridge, which will replace the existing, 109-year-old structure spanning the Harlem River, is currently docked at a facility in Jersey City, and will transit the East River before arriving at the new bridge site at approximately 10:30 a.m. Full installation of the bridge will occur in early August, with the new structure expected to open to traffic in the fall.

City Announces Start of Temporary Redesign of Times Square, Selection of Team to Lead Permanent Redesign of Area
NYCDOT Press Releases - Thu, 07/08/2010 - 16:00
New York City Department of Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan today announced that work has begun to install "Cool Water, Hot Island," the winning, temporary design treatment to refresh the streetscape at the Times Square pedestrian plazas, selected last month following a design competition. New York City artist Molly Dilworth created the design's blue-themed pattern based on NASA infrared satellite data of Manhattan, suggesting a river flowing through the center of Times Square, and providing a visual counterpoint to the area's signature marquees and billboards. Commissioner Sadik-Khan and City Department of Design and Construction (DDC) Commissioner David J. Burney also announced that the architecture firm Snohetta has been selected to lead a team that includes many New York City-based designers, engineers and event infrastructure specialists to create a plan for the permanent redesign of the iconic area, which will be reconstructed starting in 2012. Snohetta was selected through the Design + Construction Excellence program, established by Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and administered by the DDC. Snohetta's New York office is known for work ranging from the National September 11 Memorial Museum in Manhattan to the library in Alexandria, Egypt.

NYC DOT Pilot Program Finds Economic Savings, Efficiencies for Truck Deliveries Made During Off-Hours
NYCDOT Press Releases - Thu, 07/01/2010 - 17:43
New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan today announced that a pilot program undertaken with the trucking industry found that trucks making off-hour deliveries between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. instead of at peak hours experienced fewer delays, easier parking, reduced congestion and significant savings for the 33 participating delivery companies and business locations receiving shipments. The study, the first that engages both delivery companies and businesses, also found that businesses overwhelmingly supported the benefits, with travel speeds improved as much as 75% and a sharp reduction in parking tickets and fines which exceeded $1,000 a month for each truck. Several participants continue to make off-hour deliveries and DOT is now developing ways to build upon this pilot. Joining the Commissioner was U.S. Department of Transportation Research and Innovative Technology Administration (RITA) Administrator Peter Appel at a 14th Street location of Foot Locker, one of the retail participants in the study, as well as representatives from Sysco, Whole Foods Market and New Deal Logistics.
