PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

It is with great pride that I have accepted this position as President of the Traffic Squad. Some time last year, when past president Richard Pepe informed me that upon his retirement, he would like to appoint me as his successor, I was unsure if I’d be able to find the time for such an undertaking. Upon learning more about the rich and deeply rooted history of the TSBA, it was clear I had no choice but to accept the challenge and attempt to breathe new life into this once vibrant and historic organization.

Unfortunately, the Traffic Squad’s membership is now but a fraction of what it once was. The reasons are many and varied; one would include the department’s repeated restructuring of the Traffic Control Division. Another was the demanding schedule of the former president’s professional and personal life, which seriously limited the amount of time he was able to devote to the organization. There are many more reasons too numerous to mention. I thank Richie for keeping the organization alive and also for entrusting me with it’s future. I know the Traffic Squad was and will continue to be an important part of his life. At this point in time, I’m not exactly sure what direction the organization will proceed. Much will depend on not just the quantity of membership but more so on the participation of the membership. However, I can promise you that whatever the direction, it will always be in the best interest of the members.

Unfortunately, we’ve gotten off to a late start this year. Although we have a number of member benefits planned, many have not yet been finalized. To date, finalized benefits include a discounted tax preparation package and a scholarship award.

Finally, I’d like to thank all our Board Members for the commitment and dedication they have thus far displayed, without their participation, our goals could not be realized. A special thanks to Edward Lee, who with the professionalism of a Harvard professor, yet the eagerness of a child on Christmas Eve has not only agreed to be our historian but has also volunteered to prepare our newsletter, which you should be receiving some time in March.
I’m sure his love for history will prove to be a valuable asset to us all.

Although there are many other fraternal organizations worthy of your membership, most are based on race, ethnicity or religion. While you may find one or more of these organizations of interest, I hope you can appreciate the simpler, perhaps less ideological link we offer. We at the Traffic Squad have one simple connection, we move traffic, we move people; all can belong, and all can prosper.
