On June 15th, 2010, the TSBA held its annual Scholarship meeting. The evening began with some inspirational words from Supreme Court Justice Bruce Balter on the merits of higher education, hard work and integrity. Afterwards, presentations were made and photos taken with Chief of Transportation James Tuller, Hon. Comm. Joe Dippell Jr. (Centurions), and Mitch Levey (Police Reserves).
Also on hand for the evening was TSBA Member Nick Finnelli dressed in a 1870’s NYC Police Uniform. It is worth noting that for the third year in a row we were able to give every qualified applicant a scholarship. This is largely, in part, due to the generosity of our scholarship sponsors, which include our Golden Sponsors, The Centurion Foundation, and our Silver Sponsor, The New York City Police Reserves. Additional thanks goes to our Scholarship Chairman Mr. Elliot J. Tamir. In addition to helping with the Scholarship process, Mr. Tamir provided the sumptuous buffet for the evening. During the presentation of the Inspector Donald Feser Scholarship, TSBA member Robert Sharpe related some light hearted moments that he and the late Inspector shared. Insp. Feser and Bob worked together on and off for many years, and it was quite fitting that Bob’s daughter Amanda received the first memorial scholarship in Inspector Feser’s memory. Inspector Donald Feser passed away this year from an illness which was determined to have been a result from his exposure at Ground Zero. As usual, Mrs. Tuller (aka Vanna White) assisted with raffles and door prizes resulting in numerous smiling faces (see photos). You may also be interested to know that this was one of the first meetings in recent memory that Dr. King did not win. Better luck next time Doc. TSBA Chaplain Monsignor Robert Romano blessed the group and asked us all to remember our armed forces abroad who keep us safe everyday. Despite the numerous somber moments as we recalled our fallen brothers, I think it’s safe to say a good time was had by those in attendance. Finally, I’d like to remind everyone that the purpose of these scholarships is not only to help children of members attend college but also to keep the memory of those who have passed as a direct result of their service to this city. Please keep them all in your thought and prayers. Photos were taken by 1st VP John Valles as Butch Moran was unable to attend (thanks John, good job.)
